Overview

  • The Adams administration agreed to revive the busway as a formal condition of the Midtown South Mixed-Use Plan following its pause in early July.
  • The City Council’s Zoning and Franchises and Land Use subcommittees approved the rezoning on August 6, and a full Council vote is scheduled for August 14.
  • The rezoning would open up 42 blocks of Midtown South for development, enabling approximately 9,700 new housing units in one of Manhattan’s most transit-rich corridors.
  • The dedicated busway will run from Third to Ninth avenues, giving priority to buses and trucks while limiting private vehicles to pickups, drop-offs and loading, and it is expected to boost bus speeds by up to 15%.
  • A robust public engagement phase is required in 2025 to finalize traffic studies and community feedback before construction of the car-free corridor begins.
