33 Detainees Found Dead in NSCDC Custody in Niger State

The Interior Ministry has suspended the Niger State NSCDC commandant pending forensic examinations.

Overview

  • Security forces carried out raids on suspected illegal mines in the Wushishi-Lukoto area on Sept. 15–16 and detained dozens of people who were later held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
  • Hospital staff in Minna received 33 bodies on Sept. 17–18 after the detainees were found dead in NSCDC custody and the agency sent the bodies for medical examination to determine the cause of death.
  • A survivor said roughly 65 detainees were packed into a poorly ventilated cell and many struggled to breathe, while NSCDC officials have suggested a suspected disease outbreak may have played a role; the cause remains unconfirmed.
  • Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the immediate suspension of Niger State NSCDC commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye and police and medical authorities have opened formal investigations and ordered postmortems.
  • The deaths have sparked protests in Minna and raised wider concerns about detention conditions, human rights and how illegal mining operations that can fund criminal gangs are policed in north-central Nigeria.
