31,000 Kaiser Nurses and Health Professionals Set Jan. 26 Strike Across California and Hawaii

Union leaders say unresolved staffing levels are at the heart of the dispute.

Overview

  • UNAC/UHCP delivered a 10-day notice for a 10-day walkout beginning Jan. 26, with pickets planned at nearly 20 hospitals and more than 200 clinics.
  • About 31,000 frontline workers are covered, including registered nurses, pharmacists, nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners and other specialists.
  • The union cites safe staffing, timely access to care, fair pay and pension protections as priorities, while Kaiser disputes understaffing claims.
  • Kaiser says workers rejected an offer totaling 21.5% in wage increases over four years that included benefit enhancements.
  • During October’s five-day strike, Kaiser used flown-in temporary staff reportedly paid $78–$130 an hour, and the union separately announced a tentative agreement with Sharp HealthCare covering 5,700 nurses.
