31,000 Kaiser Health Workers to Strike for Five Days Starting Tuesday

Kaiser says care will continue during the walkout.

Overview

  • UNAC/UHCP says the strike will run from 7 a.m. Oct. 14 to 7 a.m. Oct. 19 following 10-day notices delivered earlier this month.
  • The walkout spans nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, rehab therapists, dietitians, speech-language pathologists, nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, midwives and other specialists, with union leaders citing safe staffing, equitable pay and benefits.
  • Kaiser says hospitals and medical offices will stay open, though some non-urgent visits and elective surgeries may be rescheduled, and certain pharmacies may close with mail delivery available.
  • The union calls it the largest strike in its history and says up to 46,000 Kaiser employees could join lines across California, Hawaii and Oregon as bargaining continues.
  • Kaiser says talks have been underway since May with 52 tentative agreements and more than 900 local sessions, while pickets are scheduled at multiple sites including San Diego’s Zion, San Diego and San Marcos medical centers and select Northern California hospitals.
