31-Year-Old Man Charged in Singapore With About 30 Child-Abuse Counts

The case is under a gag order as a domestic violence matter with a pre-trial conference set later this month.

Overview

  • Court charge sheets describe repeated acts of alleged ill-treatment of a baby under his care, including choking, suffocation with a pillow, forcing the head into a pail of water, and hanging the child on a hanger inside a cupboard.
  • Most charges stem from incidents at a flat in July and August 2024 when the child was about nine to 11 months old.
  • The latest alleged offence occurred at around 1:40pm on Sep 16, 2024 at a void deck, which is a public area in housing estates.
  • The identities of the accused and the child are protected by a gag order, and the relationship between them was not specified in court documents.
  • The accused is represented by lawyer Gino Hardial Singh, and if convicted under the Children and Young Persons Act he faces up to eight years’ jail and a fine of up to S$8,000 per charge, while the child’s current condition has not been disclosed.
