Overview

  • Health officials and multiple witnesses reported at least 31 people were killed and over 170 wounded early June 1 while heading to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution point in Rafah.
  • Eyewitnesses described Israeli forces opening fire from tanks, drones and naval platforms around a roundabout about 1,000 yards from the aid hub as crowds moved in for food.
  • The Israel Defense Forces issued a statement denying any civilian casualties from its fire and said an initial inquiry found no evidence of shots aimed at people near or within the site.
  • The US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation rejected fatality claims, asserting that aid was delivered “without incident” and blaming reports on Hamas misinformation.
  • UN agencies and major aid groups have declined to participate in the new distribution system, warning it allows Israeli control over recipients and forces mass relocation under unsafe conditions.
