Overview
- Workers installing undersea power cables for Amprion uncovered exposed timbers at the northern 'Oase' beach on Norderney and reported the find to archaeologists.
- Archaeologists from the Ostfriesische Landschaft are carrying out the on-site investigation and have recovered only elements that protruded from the sand.
- Recovered fragments, including a bow piece, are slated to be moved to secure storage and fully documented by specialists this week.
- The bulk of the vessel — estimated at about 15 metres long and five metres wide and roughly 300 years old — remains buried in situ and Amprion says cable-laying work will continue without delay.
- The site is notable because few wrecks from this period have been documented on Lower Saxony’s coast and the timbers could shed new light on regional shipbuilding and how infrastructure projects encounter buried heritage.
