3 Killed, 5 Injured as Tractor-Trailer Veers Into Oncoming Lane on Pa. Route 40

State police report the rig crossed the center line, triggering a head-on crash.

  • The collision happened around 6 p.m. Monday on Route 40 near Youghiogheny River Lake in Henry Clay Township, Fayette County.
  • A preliminary investigation found the eastbound tractor-trailer entered the westbound lanes and struck a pickup truck head-on, after which the pickup hit a Chevrolet Express van.
  • Police said the drivers of the tractor-trailer and the pickup, along with a front-seat passenger in the van, were pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Five additional passengers from the van were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries.
  • Route 40 was closed for hours in both directions between Lakeside Drive, the Yough Marina entrance and exit road, and Listonburgh Road as investigators worked the scene.
