Overview
- A Manhattan jury in May 2023 found President Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll, awarding her $5 million in damages.
- Trump contended the trial was tainted by admission of the 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape and testimony from other women who accused him of misconduct.
- In December, a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit unanimously upheld the verdict and rejected all of Trump’s evidentiary objections.
- On June 13, the full 2nd Circuit declined by an 8–2 vote to rehear the appeal en banc, with two Trump-appointed judges dissenting over the use of character evidence.
- Trump’s legal team is expected to turn to the U.S. Supreme Court and is separately appealing an $83.3 million defamation award won by Carroll.
