Overview

  • On April 22, the Supreme Court issued a fresh notice to the Delhi government seeking a response on why the ordered trauma centre in Dwarka has not been built.
  • In 2015 the court directed that Rs 60 crore paid by Gopal and Sushil Ansal fund a five-acre facility, but with accrued interest the amount now exceeds Rs 100 crore and no foundation stone has been laid.
  • The Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy has filed multiple RTIs and legal petitions to press for construction of the centre intended as a memorial for the 59 people who died on June 13, 1997.
  • Investigations into the Uphaar fire exposed blocked exits, non-functional fire extinguishers, no emergency lighting and poor ventilation at the Green Park cinema hall.
  • Families point to the success of the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre as proof that a dedicated Dwarka facility could improve emergency care and prevent future safety lapses.
