26,000 Still Without Power in Michigan After Ice Storm, With Restoration Pushed Into Saturday

Crews are also preparing for strong winds early next week.

Overview

  • Nearly 26,000 customers remained without electricity as of about 10 a.m. Saturday, including roughly 14,900 Consumers Energy customers and about 11,000 on DTE’s system.
  • Consumers Energy reported 99.2% of customers back online, with close to 500 crews working overnight and 144 crews in the field Saturday, and it aims to resolve remaining outages within 24 hours.
  • Utilities said many of the toughest repairs are concentrated in mid-Michigan, with large clusters around Big Rapids and Mount Pleasant and additional interruptions in Oakland County.
  • The storm brought freezing rain and snow Friday, with the National Weather Service calling for ice accumulations up to about 0.27 inches that contributed to downed lines and broken poles.
  • Companies urged residents to stay at least 25 feet from downed wires, report unguarded lines to 911 or the utility, and run generators only outdoors, as teams also ready for winds topping 50 mph early next week.
