24 Containers Lost Off Isle of Wight During Storm Goretti

Coastguard aircraft later found up to six containers afloat south-east of the island.

Overview

  • The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said 24 containers were lost from two ships during last night’s storm, with reports filed between about 11:10pm and 11:55pm.
  • The first vessel near the Nab Tower lost 17 containers, including refrigerated units.
  • A second vessel about 16 nautical miles south-west of St Catherine’s Point reported seven empty containers overboard, which are believed to have sunk.
  • A fixed-wing coastguard aircraft identified up to six containers floating south-east of the Isle of Wight, and navigational warnings were issued to shipping.
  • Recovery remains the responsibility of the vessels’ operators, cargo lists are under analysis, and the public must report any washed-ashore items to the Receiver of Wreck.
