236 Rescued From Powerless Cayuco 232 Nautical Miles South of Gran Canaria

  • A merchant vessel, the Teos, located the adrift cayuco on Saturday, secured it with a line and alerted Spain’s maritime rescue service.
  • Salvamento Marítimo’s guardamar Urania completed the rescue at about 02:15 local time and is sailing to Arguineguín with an expected arrival around 15:15.
  • The reported total of 236 people is provisional pending shore-side counting and medical assessments on arrival.
  • Those rescued are of sub-Saharan origin and include men, women and minors, according to the state maritime agency.
  • This marks the first rescue on the Canary route since August 12, when two boats carrying 67 people were assisted.
