22-Year-Old Man Arrested for Shooting at South San Francisco Church

Debari Charvel Augustine faces charges including attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and possession of an assault weapon.

  • South San Francisco's Saint Augustine Catholic Church was struck by gunfire on Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. with 18 shots fired at the church in broad daylight.
  • No one was inside the church at the time of the shooting, resulting in no injuries, but several windows had bullet holes and its front doors were shattered.
  • Police responded to the scene and launched a search for a male gunman in a dark-colored car.
  • A 22-year-old man, Debari Charvel Augustine from San Francisco, was arrested in connection with the shooting a few hours later and faces charges including attempted murder on the first degree, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and possession of an assault weapon.
  • The shooting prompted a lockdown at nearby Westborough Middle School and the cancellation of Wednesday mass and catechism classes at St. Augustine’s for the rest of the week.
