Overview
- A roughly 22-foot, two-tonne Ganesh idol fell during the Bhuleshwaracha Raja arrival procession on Saturday night, crushing participants and killing Sanket Nevshe and Brijesh Hemant Joshi while five others were injured.
- Hospitals and emergency teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, BMC, Mumbai Police and 108 ambulance service responded and treated the injured, who officials say are in stable condition.
- Police have registered Accidental Death Reports and opened a technical and legal inquiry after fire brigade and preliminary police checks indicated a failure in the idol’s support frame or welding and reports of loose nut‑bolts.
- Some eyewitnesses said an uneven road or trolley instability may have contributed, but police inspections so far reported no major potholes and investigators are examining the trolley, crane, fastenings and road at the scene.
- City leaders ordered 24‑hour inspections of arrival and immersion routes, promised financial aid to victims’ families, and several Ganesh mandals have canceled or simplified arrival events while safety reviews proceed.
