Overview

  • Parents of 16–19-year-olds must confirm continued full-time education or approved training by Sunday 31 August to keep receiving Child Benefit.
  • Payments will cease from 1 September without renewal, costing families about £26.05 a week for a first child and £17.25 for each additional child.
  • HMRC is processing renewals via the HMRC app, the GOV.UK service, and QR codes on reminder letters sent between May and July.
  • MoneySavingExpert and finance advisers urge claiming even for higher earners who may repay the High Income Child Benefit Charge, as doing so preserves valuable National Insurance credits.
  • Roughly 214,000 households remain at risk of losing support, despite about 870,000 parents successfully extending claims last year.
