206 Animals Rescued From Northport Home as Licensed Rehabilitator Is Charged

Prosecutors describe a multi-agency rescue with nonprofit triage now underway.

Overview

  • Investigators executed a search warrant on Oct. 1 and reported finding 206 wild and domestic animals living in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions at a Fort Salonga Road residence.
  • A 95-year-old woman was discovered on the second floor reportedly confined by debris, with authorities providing no update on her condition or relationship to the defendants.
  • Samantha Boyd, 57, a state-certified wildlife rehabilitator, pleaded not guilty after being charged with endangering a vulnerable elderly person and five counts of neglecting an impounded animal.
  • Boyd was released pending further proceedings and is due back in court on Oct. 16, while her partner, Neal Weschler, 61, faces multiple misdemeanor animal-cruelty charges and awaited arraignment.
  • The DA’s BEAST unit and several rescue groups removed the animals for veterinary care, with many expected to be offered for adoption after rehabilitation and at least one duck euthanized due to severe infection.
