Overview
- Eclipses are confirmed for Feb. 17 (annular, Antarctica and southern Indian Ocean), Mar. 3 (total lunar, Americas/Pacific/Australia/East Asia), Aug. 12 (total solar, Greenland/Iceland/North Atlantic/northern Spain) and Aug. 28 (partial lunar, about 93% coverage).
- The year features 13 full moons, opening with a Jan. 3 Wolf Moon supermoon and including a Blue Moon on May 31 plus additional supermoons on Nov. 24 and Dec. 24.
- The Jan. 3 supermoon is expected to appear about 13% brighter and 6% larger than an average full moon, according to cited observational data.
- Early January brings two potentially bright comets: 24P/Schaumasse near closest approach on Jan. 4 (both hemispheres) and C/2024 E1 Wierzchos peaking Jan. 20 (southern hemisphere).
- The Perseid meteor shower is set for especially favorable viewing on Aug. 12 under a new moon, while Solar Cycle 25’s ongoing activity could drive auroras and occasional geomagnetic storms.
