2024 Election Seen as Pivotal for U.S. Democracy
Majorities of Democrats and Republicans express concern over the future of democracy, but for different reasons.
- 62% of adults believe that the U.S. democracy could be at risk depending on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, with majorities of Democrats (72%) and Republicans (55%) expressing this concern.
- President Joe Biden has warned of a dystopian future if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House, while Trump has accused Biden of weaponizing the federal government to prosecute a political opponent.
- About half of U.S. adults, 51%, say democracy is working 'not too well' or 'not well at all'.
- 87% of Democrats and 54% of independents believe a second Trump term would negatively affect U.S. democracy, while 82% of Republicans believe democracy would be weakened by another Biden win.
