2023 Marks Record High in Migrant Deaths, UN Reports

Last year saw at least 8,565 migrant deaths worldwide, the highest number since records began in 2014.

  • The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a 20% increase in migrant deaths compared to 2022.
  • The Mediterranean Sea was the deadliest migration route, with at least 3,129 deaths recorded in 2023.
  • A significant number of deaths were also recorded in Africa (1,866) and Asia (2,138), with drowning being the most common cause.
  • The IOM emphasizes the need for greater action to ensure safe migration and prevent future tragedies.
  • Data collection challenges in remote areas like the Darien Gap in Panama may mean the actual death toll is higher.
