2023 Marks Record High in Migrant Deaths, UN Reports

Last year saw at least 8,565 migrant deaths worldwide, the highest number since records began in 2014.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a 20% increase in migrant deaths compared to 2022.
The Mediterranean Sea was the deadliest migration route, with at least 3,129 deaths recorded in 2023.
A significant number of deaths were also recorded in Africa (1,866) and Asia (2,138), with drowning being the most common cause.
