Uneven inpatient treatment rates expose prevention gaps with climbing obesity rates.

Overview

  • Cardiovascular diseases remain Germany’s leading cause of death, driving over 300,000 heart attacks and nearly 350,000 fatalities annually despite more than 90 percent surviving acute events.
  • Suhl in Thüringen recorded the highest inpatient cardiovascular treatment rate in 2023, with 55 admissions per 1,000 residents.
  • The Werra-Meißner district in Hesse and the city of Zweibrücken in Rheinland-Pfalz both logged 47 hospitalizations per 1,000 inhabitants, marking the highest regional rates after Suhl.
  • Major urban centers such as Darmstadt and Frankfurt reported about 22 cardiovascular admissions per 1,000 people, while Kaiserslautern saw only 19, with Heidelberg slightly lower.
  • Health experts say these disparities reflect differing age demographics and call for stronger screening and prevention measures in response to rising obesity and diabetes.
