  • 2023 was a year marked by political scandals, with leaders from Finland, Ukraine, Russia, Colombia, and China facing various controversies. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin stepped down following backlash over a raunchy dance video, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin grappled with corruption within their governments. Colombian President Gustavo Petro's son was arrested on charges of money laundering and illicit enrichment, and Chinese military leader Gen. Li Shangfu disappeared from public view amid a corruption probe.
  • In the U.S., former President Trump faced criminal charges in Georgia and New York, while his son, Hunter Biden, faced several criminal tax charges. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted by eight Republicans, marking the first time in American history a House leader was removed. The new Speaker, Mike Johnson, released 40,000 hours of footage from the January 6 Capitol riots.
  • Anti-Semitic incidents on U.S. college campuses came under scrutiny, with several universities suspending their Students for Justice in Palestine chapters. The issue came to a head following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas, which led to protests on campuses and accusations of Jewish students being targeted. The U.S. Department of Education launched investigations into several universities over allegations of anti-Semitism.
  • White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced criticism for her combative exchanges with reporters throughout the year. She was accused of stifling freedom of the press and faced backlash from both Republicans and White House reporters.
  • Former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin faced controversy and eventually stepped down following a raunchy dance video. Despite defending her actions as normal for her age group, Marin faced backlash and was defeated in the Finnish parliamentary election. She later stepped down as leader of the Social Democratic PartyParliament altogether.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began 2023 by forcing a series of resignations and firings of top-level officials in a bid to root out corruption in Ukraine.
