200-Year-Old Message in a Bottle Discovered at French Archaeological Site
Volunteers unearthed the time capsule during an emergency excavation at an ancient Gaulish village in Normandy.
- The message, written by 19th-century archaeologist P. J. Féret, was found in a glass vial within an earthenware pot.
- Féret documented his 1825 excavation at the Cité de Limes, also known as Caesar’s Camp, in the letter.
- The discovery was made by a team of volunteers conducting an emergency dig due to erosion on the hillside.
- Group leader Guillaume Blondel described the find as an 'absolutely magical moment' and a rare occurrence in archaeology.
- The town of Eu, which supported the dig, shared photos of the message on its Facebook page.
