Overview

  • Battalion Chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison were killed and Fire Engineer Dave Tysdal was critically wounded when the suspect opened sniper fire on Canfield Mountain responders.
  • Investigators tracked a stationary cellphone signal to locate the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley, whose body and rifle were found in the wooded area.
  • Sheriff’s officials say Roley deliberately started the Nettleton Gulch fire to lure crews and attacked them following a dispute over his parked vehicle.
  • Fire teams have resumed containment efforts on the roughly 26-acre blaze in steep terrain after securing the area and deeming it safe.
  • Governor Brad Little ordered flags at half-staff and state and federal agencies are reviewing first responder safety protocols as the probe into Roley’s motive continues.
