Overview
- Emergency services were alerted after a companion initially treated the disappearance as a prank and only later raised the alarm at a canoe entry point on the Hunte.
- Fire brigades, DLRG water rescue teams, a police helicopter with thermal imaging, a firefighting drone group, and specialized Rettungstaucher (rescue divers) conducted the search.
- Divers located the lifeless 20-year-old about 1.9 metres deep near the river entry and rescuers began resuscitation before transporting him to hospital.
- Police confirmed the victim died in hospital later that day and have not yet established what caused him to go underwater and fail to resurface.
- Responders noted the morning water temperature was around 9°C, a condition that can increase the risk of cold-water shock and complicate rescue timelines.
