Overview

  • At 12 years old in 1994, Alaina Beresford wrote a note for a school project that her teacher’s husband tossed into the North Sea.
  • In June 2025, 27-year-old German volunteer Pia Brodtmann discovered the bottle while cleaning beaches on Lisshelløya, a small island off Vega, Norway.
  • She responded with a postcard including photos of the find and details about her age, origin and hobbies of sailing and rock climbing.
  • Receiving the postcard came as a surprise to Beresford, who had not expected a reply after more than 30 years.
  • They have since connected on social media and plan to maintain their cross-border friendship.
