1962 Ferrari Sets Record as Most Expensive Ferrari Sold at Auction
Legendary Race Car Fetches $51.7 Million, Falling Short of $60 Million Expectations
- A 1962 Ferrari 330 LM/250 GTO model has become the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at auction, fetching $51.7 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York.
- The car, which is the only GTO Tipo 1962 to have been raced by Formula 1's Scuderia Ferrari, has a legendary status on the racing track, having won second place at the 1962 Nürburgring 1,000km in Germany.
- The car was previously owned by a chairman of the Ferrari Club of America and had been in private ownership for nearly four decades before the auction.
- Despite setting a record for a Ferrari, the sale fell short of the auction house’s expectations of $60 million and did not break the all-time record for a car sold at auction, which is held by a Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that sold for $144 million in 2022.
- The Ferrari 330 LM/250 GTO is one of the rarest and most sought-after sports cars, with only 36 models made from 1962 to 1964.
