1955 Message on Beer Bottle Found Inside Wall of Delaware Home Slated for Demolition

Demolition team stumbles upon 68-year-old artifact from Baltimore-based Gunther Brewing Company; the note suggests a plumber hid the bottle during a 1955 renovation.

  • The bottle is from the now-defunct Gunther Brewing Company, which operated before Prohibition in Baltimore and was one of the largest breweries in Baltimore until 1959, producing 800,000 barrels a year and employing around 600 people.
  • A man named David found the bottle during a hazardous material survey of the house for demolition. This discovery was unique in his 17-year career, which includes over 3,000 demolition inspections.
  • The green beer bottle had a note scribbled on it stating, 'This bottle was put in here by the plumber on 3/25/55.' The team first thought it was filled with urine—a common find in such situations—but were relieved to find it was empty and fascinated by the unique note.
  • The house, which is over 100 years old and in poor condition, is being demolished to make room for a parking lot.
  • Sharing his discovery on Reddit, David prompted other users to share stories of unusual items they've found in their homes during remodeling, including a century-old note and mementos from World War II.
