193rd Special Operations Wing Marks Sept. 11 With Low-Altitude Formation Over Central Pennsylvania

The flights doubled as a readiness drill for the 193rd Special Operations Wing, conducted under Air Force rules to rehearse specialized mission profiles.

Overview

  • The wing launched six MC-130J Commando II aircraft in a mass “Launch the Fleet” formation on Sept. 11.
  • The aircraft departed Harrisburg International Airport and flew from about 1 to 3 p.m. as part of routine training.
  • The route was visible from Fort Indiantown Gap, Middletown, Lewisberry, Dillsburg, Shippensburg and points along the West Shore.
  • Officials described the flights as a tribute to 9/11 victims and first responders while reinforcing low-level formation and other mission skills.
  • PennLive documented the formation with video published after the event, and the wing said the flights showcased its capabilities.
