19-Year-Old Marine Austin Schwenk Fatally Shot at Camp Lejeune; Second Marine Held as Suspect in Homicide Probe

Investigation Underway as Unnamed Suspect Arrested Hours after Shooting; Incident Occurred Days Prior to Base's Planned Annual Training Exercise

Lance Cpl. Austin Schwenk, a 19-year-old Marine who was fatally shot at Camp Lejeune, had joined the Marines in June 2022 and was part of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment on base.
The shooting incident, initially perceived as a mass shooting, has been clarified by officials as a conflict between two Marines and not a mass incident.
A second marine is currently in military police custody on suspicion of being involved in Schwenck's death, contributing to the ongoing homicide investigation led by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).
While the suspect has not yet been identified, he was arrested around 10:15 p.m. on the night of the shooting.
The tragedy occurred just two days before the base was set to partake in their annual training known as Exercise Urgent Response, a routine procedure for developing and exercising emergency security measures.
