19-Year-Old Identified in Deadly Loop 1604 Rollover

Investigators have not determined why the SUV left the road, leaving causes undetermined as officials review three fatal crashes on the corridor.

Overview

  • The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the rollover victim as 19-year-old Jala Yasmeen Charles and has not yet ruled on cause or manner of death.
  • Police say Charles was driving a Chevrolet Suburban that left Loop 1604, entered a grassy median, crossed into opposing lanes, rolled several times and ejected her from the vehicle.
  • That rollover was the third fatal crash tied to Loop 1604 in a single day, following an early-morning speed-related crash near Culebra Road that killed two people and a midmorning crash where an SUV rear-ended a cement truck and caught fire.
  • San Antonio Police are conducting preliminary investigations into all three crashes and have not released definitive causes for the collisions or the single-vehicle rollover.
  • The cluster of high-speed dynamics, rollovers and a post-crash fire has heightened local safety concerns and will likely prompt continued review by investigators and the medical examiner.
