19-Year-Old Dies After Receiving Expired IV Fluid at West Bengal Hospital

Nasrin Khatoon, on ventilation since January, succumbs to complications as investigations into regulatory lapses and negligence continue.

Overview

  • Nasrin Khatoon, 19, died on May 12, 2025, at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata after months of treatment for complications caused by expired saline administered in January.
  • Khatoon was one of nine women critically affected, including Mamoni Rui Das, who died earlier, after receiving substandard Ringer's Lactate IV fluid at Midnapore Medical College.
  • The expired saline, produced by Pashchim Banga Pharmaceuticals, had been banned in December 2024 following sterility and contamination failures identified in Karnataka tests.
  • Despite the ban, several state hospitals, including Midnapore Medical College, continued using the saline, leading to multiple fatalities and severe illnesses.
  • A 13-member health committee and the West Bengal CID are investigating the incident, while the state has suspended 12 doctors and provided compensation to victims' families.
