Overview
- Police say the victims, ages 12 and 15, were in a vacant lot on the 600-block of West 47th Street in Canaryville around 3:45 p.m. Thursday when a fight broke out.
- At least one suspect produced a gun and opened fire, striking the younger boy in the chest and the older in the hip.
- Both were taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition; the 15-year-old later died and was identified as Alex Durante.
- Chicago police arrested Daniel Navas Maiver, 19, and charged him with first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder; he is scheduled to appear in court Sunday.
- Investigators have not announced additional suspects or whether those involved attended the nearby school.
