Overview
- The July 15 protest at Acadia University saw Premier Tim Houston escorted by RCMP and his vehicle blocked with its windshield smashed as he departed the event.
- Police arrested Jacob Victor Stephen Smith, 19, of Kentville on July 17 and charged him with intimidation of a justice system participant, two counts of intimidation and mischief under $5,000.
- RCMP say the person charged is not the same individual who was arrested at the scene and released without charges, and the accused remains in custody pending further court appearances.
- The premier’s office described the crowd as having ‘swarmed’ the vehicle, while rally organizers and the Ecology Action Centre say most of the gathering was peaceful and have condemned illegal actions.
- Protesters had rallied over arts funding cuts, planned library closures, environmental concerns and Indigenous rights, and court records show the charged youth has a separate March matter that was referred to restorative justice as the broader probe continues.
