18-Year-Old Dies After Fall From Support Structure at Big Bear Dam

Investigators reporting no signs of foul play are seeking public tips as the sheriff’s office continues its probe.

  • Rescue crews from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station and Big Bear Fire Department responded to the scene around 11:03 p.m. Tuesday after an 18-year-old fell from a support structure beneath the Highway 18 bridge at Big Bear Dam.
  • Firefighters and deputies descended a steep embankment, performed lifesaving measures, and used a crane to lift a stretcher from the gulley before the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The San Bernardino County Coroner identified the victim as Isabella A. Fanuele, a recent Big Bear High School graduate whose family said she loved baking and planned to attend college.
  • The sheriff’s department says preliminary findings show no indication of suspicious circumstances and asked anyone with information to contact the Big Bear Sheriff's Station or the anonymous We-Tip hotline.
  • The bridge area is a known local hangout for youth and the family and neighbors have raised concerns about fencing and site safety that could prompt local officials to review access or barriers.
