18-Year-Old Charged in Shakopee Park Murder

Prosecutors say surveillance video, cellphone data, recovered items, forensic traces tie the suspect to the victim as investigators search for a missing firearm.

Overview

  • The 18-year-old was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 53-year-old man whose body was found off a trail at Wilkie Park.
  • Officers discovered the victim Oct. 4 with dried blood, drag marks and multiple 9 mm shell casings, and an autopsy found four gunshot wounds ruling the death a homicide.
  • Investigators say Burnsville Menards surveillance from Oct. 3 shows the suspect driving the victim’s 2023 Ford Raptor with the victim in the passenger seat shortly before the victim’s phone stopped moving near the eventual body location.
  • Police found the Raptor Oct. 5 about 1.1 miles from the suspect’s address, recovered a Raptor key among the suspect’s documents, matched the suspect’s flip-flops to video, and noted phone searches for a Glock on multiple dates.
  • The firearm has not been recovered despite searches with dogs, a cell-site simulator and mowing operations, investigators are still probing motive and other possible participants, and court processing is in the early stages.
