Overview

• Lake County authorities charged Yurem Mejia-Gomez, 18, of Round Lake Beach with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
• Deputies say a verbal confrontation at a birthday party preceded the shooting as a group left in vehicles and fired at the home.
• The victim, a 19-year-old Round Lake resident, was struck in the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene in the 35700 block of North Wilson Road around 11:15 p.m. Friday.
• Detectives located a vehicle believed to be used in the shooting at Mejia-Gomez’s home and later recovered a firearm and ammunition from a separate car after K-9 Zack alerted to it.
• The victim has not been publicly identified, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains active with additional details pending a court appearance Sunday.
