18-Year-Old Charged After Stolen Car Hits CPD Squad Car, Injuring Two Officers

Police identified 18-year-old Orlando Matos III, who now faces felony charges ahead of a detention hearing today.

Overview

  • The crash happened around 2:56 a.m. Monday in the 3600 block of North Racine Avenue near Wrigley Field, where a stolen Hyundai Elantra ran a stop sign and struck a marked Chicago police car.
  • Chicago police said the impact pushed the squad car onto the sidewalk and into a tree, and the Hyundai continued forward into three parked vehicles.
  • Matos is charged with two felony counts of aggravated reckless driving and one felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle, along with citations including failure to reduce speed and damage to public property.
  • Two officers were hospitalized with serious injuries, and police have not provided an update on their conditions; the driver was found unresponsive at the scene, taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and later placed in custody.
  • Officers were searching for vehicles tied to a reported auto break-in in Edgewater minutes earlier, and a preliminary report noted theft indicators on the Hyundai as CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit continues the case.
