18-Year-Old Arrested for DUI After Near Head-On With Port St. Lucie Sergeant

Authorities issued a reminder about supplying alcohol to minors following the Halloween weekend stop.

Overview

  • Just after 1:30 a.m. on Okeechobee Road near mile markers 123–124, Jake Abbott, 18, was driving the wrong way and nearly struck a PSLPD sergeant head-on.
  • The sergeant swerved onto the shoulder, radioed dispatch with the vehicle description, and used a spotlight to warn other motorists.
  • Abbott stopped while still facing traffic the wrong way as responding units arrived, and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office took over the case.
  • Deputies reported a strong odor of alcohol and an empty can of Twisted Tea in the vehicle before arresting Abbott on DUI and fleeing and eluding charges and booking him into the St. Lucie County Jail.
  • Police said two passengers were in the car and at serious risk during the wrong-way driving, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.
