17th-Century Coin Hoard Found in Eisleben Church Transferred to Cultural Foundation
A trove of 864 coins, hidden during the Thirty Years' War, will undergo scientific study and documentation by the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation.
- The coin hoard was discovered during renovation work at St. Andreas Church in Lutherstadt Eisleben, Germany.
- The collection includes 864 coins, with the oldest dating to the mid-14th century and the newest minted in 1638.
- Experts believe the coins were hidden to protect them from Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War.
- The Evangelical Church Association, the owner of the hoard, has loaned the collection to the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation for research and preservation.
- Plans include a full online catalog of the coins and a future presentation at the church where they were found.
