17.6 Million UK Car Trips Forecast for August Bank Holiday as Rail Works Disrupt Key Routes

Traffic analysts advise off-peak departures to dodge predicted motorway holdups.

  • The RAC expects 17.6 million leisure car journeys between Friday and Monday, warning of heavier traffic in the South East and South West and a higher risk of breakdowns based on a survey of 2,080 adults.
  • Inrix forecasts delays of more than 40 minutes on the M5 between junctions 15 and 23 on Friday and Saturday, with Friday hold-ups exceeding 30 minutes on the M20 in Kent for Channel-crossing traffic.
  • Recommended travel windows to miss the worst congestion are after 7pm on Friday, before 9am on Saturday and before 11am on Monday, with Sunday generally lighter.
  • Network Rail will undertake 261 engineering projects over the weekend, including no long-distance services between London King’s Cross and Peterborough on Sunday affecting LNER and Lumo.
  • In the West Midlands, no trains will run between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International from Saturday to Monday; Avanti West Coast will run a reduced timetable to and from Euston, with Avanti and CrossCountry services diverted and London Northwestern operating only to and from Birmingham International.
