17-Year-Old EPIC Academy Student Fatally Shot Near South Chicago School

Detectives are following forensic evidence recovered at the scene, including a car tied to an earlier expressway shooting.

Overview

  • The victim was identified by school officials as Travon Freeman, an honor-roll student enrolled in all Advanced Placement courses and a candidate for Student Council president.
  • Chicago police said two people approached Freeman during his morning bike commute and opened fire a block from EPIC Academy.
  • Investigators recovered more than 20 shell casings and later located a black sedan they determined had been used in an expressway shooting before the attack.
  • A witness reported seeing three masked people stand over the teen and shoot him before fleeing, and police have not announced any arrests.
  • EPIC Academy organized a learning day at the Museum of Science and Industry, encouraged wearing orange for gun-violence prevention, and postponed the homecoming dance to Nov. 30 at a different location.
