Overview
- A 911 call around 6:40–6:46 p.m. Sunday reported a distressed swimmer at the New Hampshire state beach.
- Witnesses said a strong current pulled the teen from shore while he swam with family, and his father became distressed trying to help.
- State lifeguards were off duty but returned to the scene, where three lifeguards and a firefighter brought both to shore and began lifesaving efforts.
- Both were taken to Exeter Hospital, where the 17-year-old was pronounced dead; the 61-year-old father was treated and is in stable condition.
- Water access was closed Sunday due to high surf tied to Hurricane Erin, and officials said swimming has since reopened as investigators ask witnesses to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian.
