1.7 Million Eggs Recalled in Nine States as Salmonella Outbreak Grows

Federal health agencies are advising consumers to check carton codes to dispose of or return eggs identified as potentially contaminated.

Overview

  • August Egg Company recalled about 1.7 million brown cage-free and certified organic eggs on June 7 citing potential Salmonella Enteritidis contamination.
  • The recalled eggs were distributed between February 3 and May 15 to retailers and restaurants across California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana and Wyoming.
  • The CDC reports 79 confirmed infections linked to the eggs in seven states, resulting in 21 hospitalizations and no deaths to date.
  • Affected cartons bear plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 with Julian dates 032 through 126, and consumers should discard or return them to the point of purchase.
  • August Egg Company has diverted all eggs to an egg-breaking facility for pasteurization and launched an internal food safety review to prevent future incidents.
