16th-Century Merchant Vessel Found 2,567m Deep Off Ramatuelle

Archaeologists plan to build a 3D digital twin of the intact site before conducting deep-sea sampling.

Overview

  • Discovery of the Camarat4 merchant ship at 2,567 metres makes it the deepest wreck ever recorded in French territorial waters.
  • French Navy sonar detected the site on March 4 and subsequent ROV dives confirmed the wreck’s remarkably preserved condition.
  • Recovered artifacts include six cannons, over 200 globular ceramic jugs, iron bars and a wooden anchor likely originating from Northern Italy.
  • Researchers have observed modern macro-debris such as soda cans and plastic containers scattered across the seabed around the hull.
  • Joint Drassm and navy expeditions scheduled for 2026 and 2027 will create a detailed 3D model and collect samples for further analysis.
