16-Year-Old JEE Aspirant Found Dead in Kota Hostel

Police are awaiting the family for a post-mortem as investigators probe claims that anti-hanging fittings were circumvented by an improvised metal rod.

Overview

  • Police say the student, a 16-year-old from Uttar Pradesh who had lived in Kota for about a year and taken online JEE coaching, was found hanging in his hostel bathroom on Monday.
  • Other hostel residents forced entry after he failed to emerge or respond and alerted Jawahar Nagar police, who sealed the room and moved the body to MBS Hospital pending an autopsy once the family arrives.
  • Reports conflict over evidence from the scene because one police account said no note was found while another said a note bearing the words “sorry, mom and dad” was recovered, and investigators have not confirmed a motive.
  • Officials told reporters that rooms had anti-hanging fittings on fans but that the student allegedly used a gym-style metal rod ordered online, a detail investigators are examining to understand how prevention measures were bypassed.
  • The case adds to long-standing concerns about mental-health strain, hostel supervision and safety in Kota’s coaching culture and could prompt renewed scrutiny of hostel checks, student support and platform responsibilities.
