16-Year-Old Arrested for Murder of Oakland Student in Attempted Robbery

Derbing Alvarado, a 15-year-old high school sophomore, was fatally shot near St. Louis Bertrand Church while walking to soccer practice with friends.

Oakland police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting of Derbing Alvarado during an attempted robbery.
The incident occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, around 4:15 p.m. near St. Louis Bertrand Church in Oakland.
Two individuals confronted Alvarado and his friends, demanding their backpacks; despite the shooting, the suspects did not take any belongings.
Alvarado, described by friends as protective, mature, and responsible, was a sophomore at Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School and would have turned 16 on April 12.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Alvarado's grieving family as the community mourns his loss.
