150-Year-Old Stepwell Unearthed in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal District
The ancient structure, registered as 'Bilari ki Rani ki Bavadi,' was discovered during excavation following the reopening of a Shiv-Hanuman temple closed for 46 years.
- A stepwell estimated to be 125-150 years old and covering 400 square meters was uncovered in the Chandausi area of Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.
- The structure, featuring four chambers and marble and brick floors, is believed to have been built during the reign of the maternal grandfather of Bilari's king.
- Excavation began after a public meeting and a local resident informed authorities about the stepwell's existence; further work is ongoing to fully uncover the site.
- The stepwell was discovered near the Banke Bihari temple, which is in a dilapidated state, and officials plan to restore both the stepwell and the temple.
- The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has also conducted surveys of other historical sites in the area, inspecting five shrines and 19 wells, with a report expected soon.
