Overview

• The youth admitted in Stratford youth court that on March 1 he hurled a 15kg sofa from the top floor of Westfield Stratford, pleading guilty to criminal damage and causing a public nuisance.
• CCTV and self-shot footage showed the sofa’s 50ft fall over a glass balustrade, narrowly missing shoppers below and causing about £500 in damage.
• Prosecutors removed the recklessly endangering life count, leaving only charges of criminal damage and public nuisance against the boy.
• District Judge Talwinder Buttar granted conditional bail and ordered pre-sentencing reports ahead of the August 13 hearing, warning that custody remains a possibility.
• A second 15-year-old, who filmed the stunt, denies the same charges and is next due to appear in youth court on September 24.
