15-Year-Old Missing After Falling Into Open Drain in Jasola

Delhi Fire Service joined by the NDRF are searching a heavily silted drain that feeds the Agra Canal with continuous water flow and narrow lanes blocking full access.

Overview

  • The boy, identified as 15-year-old Mithun, fell into the uncovered drain in Jasola while retrieving a kite at about 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and has not been found.
  • Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force and a Boat Club unit have searched the drain, adjoining stretches and the Agra Canal but have located no trace.
  • Teams say the search is hampered by a steady water flow, heavy silt and clogged sections that run underground near Cribs Hospital, and narrow local lanes that prevent bringing in heavy clearing equipment.
  • Mithun’s family, who moved to Delhi from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, remain at the site and allege divers did not enter the drain and that responders probed the water from the surface.
  • The incident highlights recurring safety risks from open, poorly maintained drains that carry treated sewage water and is likely to raise fresh scrutiny of local drainage upkeep by civic agencies.
